COMBINAISON, or to combine, is the act of bringing together separate elements to form a new whole.

COMBINAISON is an art festival born from the desire to combine artistic disciplines to create new forms of expression. For 4 days, right in the heart of the city, artists from a wide range of creative backgrounds have shown us how worlds that are different at first glance can come together to create something different, even for just a moment.

An eclectic program

From photography to textiles, artists Jonas Reubens, Lauren Bouden and Diana Waddington tell us their stories, both personal and collective, in an exhibition co-curated with the Veduta collective. In the basement, a play of light and shadow takes us on a journey through a creation conceived with young people from MJ88.

Throughout the four days of the festival, a number of musical artists have come to enrich the exhibition with their own unique worlds of sound. Martha Da’Ro, a performer whose musical universe is a spellbinding blend of neo-soul, hip hop and funk, is one of the festival’s highlights. Several DJ sets punctuate the festivities with artists such as Egidius, Elvira and Judith Kiddo. Anna Masuco presents a performance combining visual art and a story of construction and de-construction, parallel to the history of the venue as it undergoes changes over time.

The festival is also punctuated by activities developed in collaboration with other Brussels collectives. These include a writing workshop by the Blurbs collective, and a relaxing Sound Sunday by La Matinée collective.

A co-creation process

A series of ‘urbex’ workshops were organised with the Maison de jeunes Le 88.  Accompanied by professional photographers, the youngsters visited the different floors of an abandoned building. The result was a series of photographs, which the participants then put on display at an exhibition to introduce them to scenography. In the same line, a workshop organised by Blurbs also took up this desire for co-creation, this time focusing on writing songs based on revolutionary texts. Thought up collectively, these songs live on within the community, beyond the individual.
