alternate worlds
On 7th and 8th July 2022, the international conference ALTER 2022 took place, bringing together academics and associations from all over Europe.
This conference aims to unfold the notion of institution in all its facets and on various stages, from disciplines and sometimes from positions that are distinct depending on the country or disability under consideration. It will also examine the history, issues and experiences of deinstitutionalisation in its various forms, and outline the possible contours of an inclusive society that respects the freedom of choice of people with disabilities.
On the occasion of the international conference ALTER 2022, Alternate worlds invites you to take a look at artists and stories from the margins. What if art was also a source of institutionalisation?
This exhibition is an opportunity to highlight initiatives that rethink art and its boundaries.
Alternate Worlds has brought together three art institutions for this exhibition.
The Art et Marges museum in Brussels, which aims to promote shadow artists called “outsiders”, such as self-taught artists, artists with disabilities and artists with psychiatric disorders.
La “S” Grand Atelier, a centre for raw and contemporary art, known for its advocacy of artists with mental disabilities and for its activity as an artistic research laboratory.
Finally, the Ateliers Indigo, an association that supports some twenty artists with disabilities.
These three partners put us in touch with 10 contemporary artists whose work has been exhibited: Sarah Albert, Irène Gérard, Dominique Théate, Juanma Gonzalez, Kenneth Rasmussen, Caroline Dahyot, Charles Dadah, Valérie de Witte, Yann Piette and Alice Forsberg.
